Description

The New York Times bestselling author of the Tangled books returns with the third standalone romance in the Legal Briefs series, a collection of sexy novels about first crushes, second chances, and the final verdict of the heart.

When Brent Mason looks at Kennedy Randolph, he doesn’t see the awkward, sweet girl who grew up next door. He sees a self-assured, stunning woman…who wants to crush the most intimate–and prized–parts of his anatomy beneath the heels of her Louboutins.

When Kennedy looks at Brent, all she sees is the selfish, Abercrombie & Fitch catalogue-worthy teenager who humiliated her in high school in order to join the popular crowd. A crowd that made those years a living hell for her.

But she’s not a lovesick social outcast anymore–she’s a Washington, DC, prosecutor with a long winning streak. Brent is the opposing attorney in her next case, and Kennedy thinks it’s time to put him through a little hell of his own.

But things aren’t exactly working out the way she planned. Brent has his sights set on Kennedy, and every fiery exchange only makes him want her more–and makes her wonder if he’s as passionate in the bedroom as he is in the courtroom. In the end, they may just find themselves in love…or in contempt of court.

⭐ ARC was provided in exchange for an honest review.APPEALED GETS THE FREAKING GOLD IN THIS BEAUTIFUL, FUNNY, HEART-WARMING, SO FREAKING SEXY AND HOT, SECOND CHANCE, FRIENDS-TO-LOVERS, CHILDHOOD SWEETHEARTS ROMANCE WRAPPED IN A PRETTY RED BOW THAT IS EMMA CHASE SIGNATURE MALE POV.So… Appealed. Aaaaahhhhh OMG I love this book so hard! *wipes tears* I could definitely tell now that it’s one of my top reads this year! And 2016 has only just begun! You’ll know what I mean when you read it. Don’t skip the Acknowledgments because you should know by now that when that page alone made your eyes water, the deal has been sealed. You should proceed with caution. Haha! Make sure you pack tissues, too!Appealed is when filthy rich lawyer Brent Mason gets a reality check in the balls in the face of his childhood friend Kennedy Randolf. Growing up, both of their mothers had already pairing them up because that’s just how it is with modern royal family. But it wasn’t an easy feat because they were both still young and crazy. Being young and at that age makes one practically an idiot because of his choices. That’s pretty much Brent if you’d ask me. And him seeing Kennedy—the stunning, gorgeous, confident Kennedy—made him swallow his own tongue. But not just because of her perfection but also because he found out that Kennedy is the ruthless prosecutor whose feet he has to kiss to make a plea deal for his client’s sake. And maybe for his own as well because once upon a time they had feelings for each other and that’s enough for Brent to get his gear ready for the trial of his life. Did I mention Brent’s relent-to-the-freaking-less? Yep.Brent Mason is the pride of mankind. He’s brilliant, funny, great in the courtroom, even greater in the bedroom, royally wealthy. He’s also dependent to his butler Harrison because the d*ckhead doesn’t even know how to turn the freaking stove on. And now I’m thinking if I should retract the brilliant. Haha! The guy has also some issues because of an accident that made him lose his limb so a visit to the therapist is something on his to-do list every now and then. But he’s not even sorry about it. In fact, I think that made him a bigger man because he works on his issues with a therapist. Not any man could do that. And there was Kennedy Randolph who put a Brent Mason to shame. Hot, bad*ss prosecutor, totally amazing woman with a heart of gold. My kind of woman.Brent and Kennedy’s journey to love though it was so freaking beautiful was unexpected because of the doubts that loomed over their heads. It was one step forward, two steps backward kind of love at first but that just made Appealed even greater. Because you don’t get to fall in love with someone you hate for a long time that instant, right? All the effort that Brent exerted though to win Kennedy? Very admirable. I couldn’t ask for a better character that would do it the way it should be done other than Brent Mason. Oh look, a Top BBF medal for Brent!I was thinking how Emma could pull off this kind of plot where there’s so much hate from the LI because of what happened to them in the past. But you know how it is with Emma: s*xually-charged chemistry and charm in one? You’ll never get it anywhere but here! Appealed also boasted that fairy tale, suspense, romantic vibes that made it interestingly awesome! And perfect! I couldn’t help but just to sigh because of its perfection.Appealed nailed every thing. Every. Thing! Outstanding male POV—only The Emma Chase could whip because that’s her dominion—check! Romance at its finest—check! Pair it all up with wit, scorching hot scenes, highschool love that didn’t wither, uncertainty—check, check, check! And the best part? The series was wrapped stunningly it made my heart ache because I had to say good bye to yet another unforgettable group of men and women (and children) who brought me to tears. Why do you have to leave me? Why?!BEST.BOOKHANGOVER.EVER.Emma Chase in Appealed just solidified that stark reality that she owns the Male POV Kingdom and that she’s consistent to deliver laugh out loud, tear-inducing stories, with top of the line main characters and love interests that will surely tug at your heartstrings and leave you wanting for more. It’s absolutely crazy; I couldn’t believe she could do it! Either she really loves what she does and that shows in her books or she’s a freaking witch and this is all just sorcery. I’m aiming for the former.

⭐ This was another FABULOUS series written by the amazing Emma Chase. Since OVERRULED, I have had a little crush on Brent and I have to say after having read this one I am seriously in love with him. APPEALED has two of my favorite tropes, friends to lovers, and second chance romance.Brent is the last of the crew to remain single. Even though he has a prosthetic leg, it doesn’t stop him from being the ultimate ladies man. He’s a serious charmer and sinfully sexy as well. He’s never had the desire to commit to one woman, or truth be told, he hasn’t been tempted since his high school years. All this changes when he runs into his old childhood friend, Kennedy Randolph. She was the “girl next door”. They were the best of friends as children and for a brief moment in High School, they almost became something more, but a misunderstanding ended their romance before it even had a chance to blossom. Kennedy was a little geeky during their teenage years and had to deal with bullying, which Brent wasn’t fully aware of at the time but he also didn’t stand up for her back then. When they meet again, she has gone through a transformation which is making Brent’s head spin, but even back when they were kids he was head over heels for her.Now they end up being on opposite sides of the court room. Kennedy is the prosecuting attorney in a case that Brent is working the defense for. Sparks fly instantly. There seems to be so much animosity on Kennedy’s side that you know you are in store for some seriously STEAMY sex, and hell yes, it was panty melting HOT!!!Brent has never been able to get close to a woman because in the back of his mind he was comparing them all to Kennedy and they all came up lacking. Now that he has a chance with her, he will do anything to win her heart. The only problem is that Kennedy has had about the same social life as Brent. She has never gotten serious with any man and runs in the opposite direction when a man tries to tie her down. Things that hurt her in the past keep her from opening herself up to any potential heart break. Brent has his work cut out for him as far as Kennedy’s concerned. The whole gang is back this last book in the series and I couldn’t have been any happier. Stanton, Sofia, and Jake will be the voice of reason when Brent really needs them the most. I really love all these characters and am kind of sad to have to say goodbye to them now, but I am HIGHLY recommending it to all of you who have not picked up this series yet. You will NOT be disappointed.I know that I will read ANYTHING that Emma Chase writes. I am a fan for life!

⭐ Brent was one of my favorite male characters because he still had the humor of a mischievous kid, but was also such a charmer. He and Kennedy were neighbors and friends as kids. In their teens things got rough and they went their separate ways each thinking it was for a different reason than it was. They end up being opponents on a court case and the rest is the story. APPEALED really focused on these two and their past and present relationships. When they were together, they made rabbits look lazy. Brent was a “just go for it” kind of guy. He set out to win Kennedy’s trust. She was smart and strong but not always confident about Brent because of their history. There is also a danger/suspense element to this store putting usually unflappable Brent into protective mode. I read the book in one sitting.

⭐ Shel: I’m sure some could categorize this novel as friends to lover?second chance at romance?contemporary romance?romantic comedy?Court: I completely agree. It is funny, and sweet and sexy. It is classic Emma Chase, and she brought us once again characters that we love, and pages that flow and fly by and just…a perfect novel. Just what I needed.Shel: Honestly, it could be any of those but what I call this novel is the perfect weekend read. It had all of the things I needed this weekend–funny banter, sexy chemistry, interesting back story, and a HEA. The plot was light but not too light–it was fun to follow Brent and Kennedy’s history through flashbacks, the secondary characters helped add to their romance through humor and insight, and the subplot was carefully woven throughout. The angst was low, the characters faced obstacles with more maturity than many, and Brent not only educates us on the finer points of going to therapy, I loved how he (thanks to Emma Chase) treated living most of his life being an amputee (Chase had the perfect touch when it came to description, dialogue, and reactions by others). Court: I really enjoyed it. I am not sure what I was expecting just since we had been in this world a while, and thought we knew what to expect from our characters. We got a little bit different from Brent, even though the humor of this series, and this author are still there. Brent’s voice is so strong, and I like that he identifies with his privilege but also doesn’t shy away from hard work. I really thought that his below knee amputation was a great part of this story, and how he talks about it and deals with the set backs that he still has because of it. It was inspiring and uplifting, and really humanized the characters for me.Shel: If you’re deeply offended with arrogant male characters who happen to be really self aware… and the women who fall in love with them, or you aren’t in the mood for a light, funny, sweet, and sexy romance than by all means don’t read this novel. For the rest of you, grab this one and enjoy; Emma Chase is quickly becoming my go to for romantic comedy and I am excited to see what she writes next. Court: I very much noticed his self awareness, and loved it. So funny you said that! Because Brent is not…one to shy away from what he thinks. Kennedy isn’t either, and I really enjoyed her as a character and addition to our girls, but I loved that Brent was still our main voice and our point of view was for him. I too loved his therapist, and the enlightening things that he figured out a long the way. I just had an all around good time reading this book, and hope you will read it too!

⭐ This was another fantastic read from the rom-com queen! Emma Chase knows exactly how to make her readers laugh and swoon, and she does it perfectly with her characters’ rapid-fire dialogue and scorching hot chemistry! The Legal Briefs series has been full of smart, witty, and sexy characters, so it was no surprise at all that I fell in love with the newest couple, Brent and Kennedy. Brent has been the fun “little brother” type so far, especially when compared to the power couple of Stanton and Sofia and knight-in-steely-armor Jake Becker. He’s playful and 100% entertaining. I was excited to finally get Brent’s point of view and to see how Kennedy Randolph, his childhood friend-turned-enemy, would push all of his buttons!–She throws up her hands and moves to the doorway.”See you tomorrow, angel,” I call to her back.A minute later, Harrison steps sedately into the room after seeing her to the front door.”Angel?” he wonders.”Sure.” I raise my glass to my lips. “It was an angel who brought the plagues down on Egypt.”–I started this book on a Friday morning, while sitting at the breakfast table. Really, it was just a fabulous way to kick off my weekend. I resumed reading later that night, with a big cup of tea in hand…and I could not stop until I finished at 1 AM! This is the kind of book that you will happily stay up all night for! The story pulls you in instantly. The pace is so addictive. You’ll just want to keep going and going! Emma’s sharp, quick-witted writing makes her characters jump off the page, and they will demand your complete and full attention.–Some people think it’s weak to see a therapist–but they couldn’t be more full of s***. It takes some big brass balls to bare your thought to another person. Your fears, faults, down-and-dirty desires. It’s like a workout for the soul. It forces you to see yourself–the real you.–Friendships done right are my absolute favorite thing to read, and this Becker-Mason-Santos-Shaw combo is truly a wonderful thing. It was great having the whole group around in this book! The supporting cast shines just as brightly as the main stars! Whenever Brent shared a scene with his fellow lawyers (hey Jake *heart eyes*), I couldn’t help but let out happy sighs or excited squeals. Again, the dialogue and chemistry. Emma just breathes life and personality into these characters. But…The others are all in serious relationships or have families now, which leads to the setup for Brent’s story. He has a successful career, is wealthy and devilishly handsome…So what’s missing from his life? What does he want/need?–“And what if…what if the reason I’ve never let myself fall in love with a woman is because I didn’t have anything to give? Because I’d already given my heart to her when we were seventeen years old? And all these years…I’ve just been waiting for her to come back to me with it.”–Enter: federal prosecutor Kennedy Randolph. I loved meeting feisty Kennedy! She walks back into Brent’s life with sass and confidence, but she’s got a major chip on her shoulder thanks to their complicated history. Once upon a time, these two were neighbors, friends, and in their mothers’ eyes, a great match for each other. However, an incident in high school tore that relationship to shreds, and years and distance kept them apart. Kennedy is back now and wants to knock Brent on his a**. There’s a competitive fire, one that burns a very fine line between professional and personal. 😉 I loved how these two riled each other up! If you miss Drew and Kate from Emma Chase’s Tangled series, and have been wanting something similar to that love/fight back-and-forth, you’ll be extremely happy with the battles between Brent and Kennedy!–It’s the perfect combination of sweet and evil. Delicious but deadly. A smile that says I’m going to destroy you–and you’re going to love every f*****g second of it.–Along with the heat and humor, though, there’s also a significant theme that gives a very real heartbeat to this couple. It explores bullying, how we treat others, and how deep our criticizing words can cut…and leave scars. And for Brent, it’s also about realizing what’s important to you and standing up to protect those you care about. It was a new kind of defense for this attorney to learn. 😉 It gave this already fantastic romance a very poignant, realistic, and heartwarming touch!–“I’m sorry, Kennedy.” Whatever she was going to say is lost in a breath. And there’s a softening in her features, the slight curve of her mouth, the relaxing of her jaw that tells me she’s relieved. That even if she didn’t realize it, she’s been waiting for this.–Yes, Brent and Kennedy are hilarious together. Yes, bedroom (and office *cough* ) scenes are heavenly. Plus, Brent in boyfriend mode? Really? *wide grin* The thing I enjoyed most, though, was seeing these two work out what happened in their past, seeing Brent mature and Kennedy let her walls down. Their reunion may have been tense–and it was never easy for either of them to risk their hearts for love–but in the end, Emma makes all of the hard fought battles worth it. Falling in love is worth it! There’s even an UH-MAY-ZING happily ever after that wraps this series up beautifully. It’s the kind that makes your heart flip out, with every line that you read. You love what’s happening, but you hate that it means the journey is coming to its bittersweet end. *praise hands* This author! This series!!!I’ve loved these characters, from beginning to end, and all of the crazy rides they’ve taken my heart on! If you want that perfect blend of smart, funny, and sexy, I recommend that you get your hands on the Legal Briefs series immediately!

⭐ reviewI received a copy of this from the publisher. I ended up buying my own copy anyway, but I wanted you to know that I initially received it for free. This, as always, does not have any effect on my opinion of the story.Be still my heart…Appealed hit all of the high marks for me in terms of what I want from a romance. Emma Chase is definitely one of my automatic buys. I KNOW without a doubt that she will have me laughing riotously, clutching my chest in sympathy, swooning at the romance, and completely absorbed in the story. This is the final installment in the Legal Briefs series. I was curious about who would slay Brent. He is a really good-natured person. He is a bit of a Romeo, but only because he hasn’t met the one. But it turns out he has met her and let her get away. When Kennedy comes barreling back into his life he is determined that this time, he won’t let her go. Kennedy is angry at Brent from some real and perceived hurts he inflicted on her when they were teenagers. She is ready for her reunion with Brent and determined to make him sorry that he let her go all of those years ago. But she is not prepared for Brent to already be sorry and for him to be so unabashed in his desire to win her back. She puts up a good fight, but Brent’s sincerity and charm win her over pretty tidily.Brent’s a special guy. He was born into great wealth, but has managed to not let that be the making of him. He has struck out on his own and is a criminal defense lawyer in DC. So, I’m a lawyer, too and honestly, there are times when books like this drive me nuts. Not so with this series…I am always to swept away by the story to worry about the details of the court procedures. Who cares when you have two soul mates trying to find a way to get back to each other? Brent also has a prosthetic limb. He lost part of his leg when he was a child and while we see him not letting the disability limit him physically, it has taken an emotional toll on him that really starts to become a weight around the growth of his relationship with Kennedy. This is told strictly from Brent’s point of view. But trust me when I tell you that no one does this better than Emma Chase. Her guys are everything you would hope the a man would be. Not perfect, not without faults, but very good at their core.I have written reviews for Tamed and Sustained. You will find my comments on her deftness at romantic comedy and writing from the male POV very similar to what I’ve said here. This book was great. But the extra epilogue made it spectacular. I wish more authors used this device. It can really give the reader a sense of closure that they can live with. I’m not a huge crier. Not in general, anyway. But this made me tear up…with tears of nostalgia and joy. Ms. Chase is a gifted storyteller and I can’t wait to read whatever she writes next.5 PLUS star for this story!Sensuality rating: [flame rating”five-flames”]Happy reading, Lovers!

⭐ This has been such a good series. Four attorneys. Friends, colleagues, family.Appealed is the third and final book. Brent and Kennedy’s story. It’s been fun watching Brent sit back and enjoy the teasing and frustration of his friends finding their happily ever afters. But things are a bit different when it’s his own HEA in the balance. And it’s even less fun when he realizes who the opposing attorney is on his new case. The only girl he’s ever loved. The shy, pretty and a bit geeky, girl next door. The same girl who left him after their one night together fifteen years earlier. Kennedy. But she is no longer the sweet innocent girl he once new. She has become a pit bull with steel jaws. Once she gets her teeth into you she will not let go until she has won her case. Whatever it is. She does not lose. And she has a thing or two to teach her one time best friend. This was a great story. Not nearly as funny as the previous book, but a nice second chance love story. Brent and Kennedy both have done a lot of growing up since they last saw each other. But there are secrets. Misunderstandings and set ups that should have been hashed out and talked about. But instead, ignored and allowed to fester. Which leads to all the hard feelings and resentments. It does have an HEA. I loved the little peeks into the previous characters lives. And it has a great epilogue.

⭐ “Once upon a time she was my best friend. For a hot moment she was more. After that, she hated me. And then she was just . . . gone.”FINAL DECISION: Managing to be funny and heartbreaking at the same time, APPEALED reminds us that we all make painful mistakes but that sometimes a second chance can be even better.THE STORY: Brent Mason is a criminal defense attorney in Washington, D.C. Now that all his partners are married, Brent is alone living the single life. At that moment, Kennedy Randolph re-enters his life. Brent and Kennedy grew up together. Friends, then almost lovers, then enemies, then nothing. An amputee at a young age, Brent has learned to keep his distance from people, but he always had a connection with Kennedy. Kennedy is now a prosecutor who arrives in D.C. just in time to be opposing counsel on Brent’s new case. Battling in each on the case and also the past, the two get a second chance to find the connection that has always existed between them even despite a 14 year absence.OPINION: I read the three books in this series quickly because I found them unique, funny and yet incredibly emotional. What I loved about his book is that Brent has always loved Kennedy but he didn’t do the things he needed to do to keep her. Youth, immaturity worked to drive Brent and Kennedy apart and yet there has always been something to connect them.Sometimes I think it is strange to read a book that consists only of the male point of view and yet I never failed to understand Kennedy’s perspective. As with the other books in the series, giving the hero’s point of view prevents him from appearing to be a jerk. I liked that I could understand his confusion, his pain and his motivation. Even as he sometimes does stupid things, I can appreciate that he is human and not being malicious. For example, at one point in the book he makes an ultimatum that Kennedy rejects. Brent ends up miserable and ends up conceding entirely to Kennedy’s viewpoint because he was wrong. I liked him better because I understood what drove him to make the mistake and then his ability to apologize and concede entirely. That makes him a strong compassionate man who I liked more because of his imperfections. The characters feel human, real, fallible but their relationship is infused with joy. The battle of wills is good natured between these two. I like that their relationship always appears a connection of equals. Their courtroom fights were especially ones that I liked because I appreciate a clever legal tactic. One of the best things about this series overall is how likeable the characters are. In addition, each of the stories is unique and doesn’t follow a standard formula. The challenges each couple faces is unique and yet the entire series is infused a hopeful attitude. The book has a lightness, a freshness and an effervescence that compelled me to rush through this book. My biggest disappointment was that there isn’t a next book. I especially found the voice of this book, the writing and tone to be attractive. I’m going to try another series by this author to see if I enjoy it as well because this series was fantastic.WORTH MENTIONING: The book includes an extended epilogue that will please those who have read the entire series.CONNECTED BOOKS: APPEALED is the third book in the Legal Briefs series. It can be read as a standalone but also gives glimpses of series favorites for fans to enjoy.STAR RATING: I give this book 4.5 stars.

⭐ This book was the first surprise of 2016 to me. I only say that because I loathed the first book in this series, Overruled. Even now, just thinking about it fills me with such rage. But I picked up Appealed on a whim. I kept hearing such great things about this book from bloggers I trusted and I really do love shows, movies, and books that deal with the law and lawyers. I took a Law Studies class in high school and it was a lot of fun.Honestly, if I didn’t want to be a full-time writer (one day this will happen!) I would become a lawyer. In fact, my dad wants me to be lawyer and write books on the side. But that just not for me. SO I turn to books, movies, and TV shows to live vicariously through them. And I am pleased to say that not only did I not hate Appealed but I actually LOVED IT! Like I really, really, really loved it!I went in with pretty low expectations, cause despite the reviews I was seeing I still wasn’t sure if the book was for me. However, I was blown away with how invested I became with this story and the two main characters. I was so invested that I read this book in one sitting and am wanting to order the paperback so I can have a physical copy on my shelf.Appealed is told solely in the perspective of the male protagonist (my english major is showing) Brent Mason which Emma Chase is known for. While I haven’t read her other series, I do know it is told from the POV of the guy. That element made the book feel really refreshing. It’s different and I liked it. Brent comes from money, like sinking rich old money, and he’s used to living a certain lifestyle. He’s not one for commitment either. He just wants no strings attached fun. Then at a family party he sees the girl that got away. Like she literally disappeared and he hadn’t seen or heard from her in years. Now, she looks different though. Gone is the shy nerdy girl with the brown eyes and in her place stands a confident blond hair, blue eye beauty who wants nothing to do with Brent. You see, Kennedy was Brent’s best friend growing up. They were next door neighbors and even went to the same boarding school. But these two had two different personalities growing up. Brent was more out going while Kennedy was more shy and liked her small group of friends being in the popular crown (Brent’s crowd). And when Brent’s crowd picked Kennedy as a victim and bullied her to the point where she left school, Brent did nothing. It wasn’t until later on, like present day, that Kennedy finds out that Brent had no idea. Now that Brent has Kennedy back in his life, he’s not going to let her go. She’s the girl that deserves everything and Brent is determined to be the man she chooses to have by her side. There are just two problems:1. Brent has to prove to Kennedy she can trust him with her heart2. She’s the opposing counselor on a caseCan these two really start something without mixing business? Brent is confident they can. He just wants Kennedy to let him back into her life and he is willing to do anything to get there. You guys! This book. This book has my heart. I can’t stop talking about it. I just want to hold it close to my chest and never let it go. Brent Mason is definitely boyfriend material and Kennedy Randolph is such a badass. She’s tough, takes no bulls***, and stands up for what she feels is right. She also doesn’t bend her will for a man. There has only ever been one man to touch her heart and that is Brent. The chemistry between these two is smoking! I’m a full on shipper of these two. Kennedy is the only girl that can handle Brent and Brent is the guy that is there to support Kennedy, and also defend her when they’re around their families. Seriously, her mom might mean well but you can phrase it nicely, lady! I cheer Brent on when he put Mrs. Randolph in her place!Seriously, this book totally was everything. Everything I wanted and everything I needed. I need more books like this. I’m so glad that I took a chance on this book, despite my salty feelings toward the first one. I had completely different reactions toward them!

⭐ The third installment in the wonderful Emma Chase series is as advertised–a fun sexy romp with fun sexy characters. It’s a story of childhood friends who are reunited after 15 years rife with misunderstandings, missed opportunities and unrequited love (sort of). What works: Nobody writes the male POV like Emma! The dialog is snappy and laugh out loud (or at least chuckle out loud) funny. Each character has an interesting back story and the steam factor is off the charts, albeit a bit overdone. What doesn’t work: A 32 year old successful lawyer who says things like, “you wrecked me at the senior dance” borders on ridiculous. I want to read about ADULTS! Both Brent and Kennedy have much more depth and potential than what we see–much of each character remains unexplored. Also, while I like dirty talk as much as the next gal, Brent’s use of the C-word is a deal breaker for me. Come on Emma–ewwwwwwwwww.Bottom line: Appealed just came up short for me. I love Emma Chase and will certainly read her next offering. Here’s hoping it’s more like the delicious Tangled or Overruled!
