⭐Here is my Stephen King dilemma: I think he is one of the most talented American writers alive today. I love the way he writes. I love his stories. But I can’t read horror. I just can’t! So I flirt around the edges of King’s oeuvre, having read only “11-22-63,””The Dead Zone” and “On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft.” With this book, I continue my flirtation with the edge of not-quite-horror.It takes a few pages to get into the book simply because of the way it is written. Dolores Claiborne has apparently been hauled into the local police station of Little Tall Island, a small island off the coast of Maine and where Dolores has lived her entire life. She is being questioned for a murder she claims she didn’t commit but in the process cops to one she did commit decades earlier.The book is her hours-long oral statement to two police officers, both of whom she has known since they were little boys, and a court stenographer. It’s one long quotation. One long chapter. But once I got into the flow of Dolores’s words and story, it was a riveting read as we readers become one with the mind of a murderer. Ah, but under the circumstances, wouldn’t many have done the same thing?This is not a horror story. It’s a dramatic, tragic psychological narrative, but also it’s a literary achievement—and exactly why I love reading Stephen King (around the edges, that is).

⭐This was my 1st Stephen King novel. I only read it because a dear friend of mine is playing Vera at the NYC Opera in 2 weeks. I’m not one to read fictions or novels so I usually speed read and honestly got quite frustrated at how long it took to get to the obvious. At the same time, I couldn’t stop reading & this book has consumed my every free minute for the last week. I even read it while blow drying my hair today because I knew I had to finish it today and today was when I realized, this story is awesome!! And in a world of multitasking, deadlines, to do lists that never end….. you have to make the time to read this book.

⭐I’ve watched the movie more times than I care to admit. Then, I read the book and thoroughly enjoyed reading the many wonderful details. King is a genius, which is not new. I was surprised by his ability to understand and convey the world from a woman’s perspective–not a stereotypical over-feminized one, his appreciation for the pain that real housework takes on the body, the complexity of family and violence, the blurred lines between home and work, and the way hard choices free and haunt us simultaneously for much longer than we ever expect.

⭐Great novel by King about an older woman arrested for a murder she didn’t commit. She has the gift of gab and proceeds to tell a fascinating story of a murder she did commit 30 years earlier.It is almost a sister novel to Gerald’s Game as both have pivotal events that take place 30 years earlier during a summer eclipse.

⭐I’m no huge Stephen King fan, unlike my husband who adores everything he touches, but I’ve always admired how versatile his writing is. I suppose I’m more of a secret admirer than I care to admit, though I’ve only actually finished It and the Shining prior to this book. The other stories, though I haven’t read them, I’ve watched the film adaptations of many. But I have to say, I appreciate this book so much. It doesn’t have the typical gory spooky details most of his stories seem to have, although even this one has its moments, but it has sincerity and deep meaning. I love the humor through the story and even Claiborne’s voice is comical in itself. But the most moving part of the story for me is the relationship and overall love that two old women found in each other. I watched the movie first, which have me the desire to read the story and of course the book is much better. I finished it in about the days. Couldn’t recommend it enough. It’s clearly for anyone, but I think it will truly speak to the hearts of women. Thank you for this read, Mr. king. I wish I had gotten to it sooner.

⭐Superb novel by the master. If you’ve seen the movie, you can put a face to the main character. Superb performance by Oscar winner, Emmy winner and Golden Globe winner Kathy Bates.

⭐When Vera Donovan dies suddenly, her housekeeper Dolores is ready to tell her version of what happened, but with gossip and long-standing suspicions about how her own husband died, Dolores needs to put things straight, so her story is going to be told her way and it’s going to include pretty much everything.This has been on my bookshelf for ages, so I thought it was about time I got around to it. Having never seen the movie version (and knowing how much Hollywood can mess up a story), I wanted to get the original under my belt first. Stephen King’s reputation as a horror writer is perhaps a little over done, as some of his books have very little to do with the genre. This is one of those stories that’s centred around relationships rather than spooky stuff, and while there are some pretty gory details and a good few images that’ll likely stay with me for weeks to come, it’s definitely not a book for scaring folk.Unusually, Mr King takes a different approach with this book and instead of chapters, he just writes the whole thing through from start to finish with no breaks. Told from the point of view of the main character and in her very distinctive voice, we hear about her children, her home life and her difficult marriage to Joe, but it’s her love/hate relationship with Vera and how the two women’s lives connect through the years and impact (especially) on Dolores, that make this such a powerful and moving tale.The writing and King’s use of language is superb and had me hooked from page one, demonstrating the author’s continuing and ever-growing talents as a storyteller. With a unique and strong central character, this is a thought-provoking tale that I’ll remember for a very long time.NB After writing this, I took a look at the trailer for the movie Dolores Claiborne, and much as I love Kathy Bates, it’s clear that it’s a very different kettle of fish to the book, so much so, that I think I can safely say I’m never going to watch it.

⭐I choose to have this book five stars because I literally couldn’t put it down. It was excellent. The story was superb and the book its much stronger than the film. I loved the way the entire story comes from Dolores POV , send it’s very different from Stephen Kings other books,with a strong feminist outlook to it. There was one thing I didn’t like,which concerned the happy ending that Dolores chose to give away IMO. Of course,out depends on your outlook. It was a very good thriller,with strong moments of tension and excitement, beautiful moments between two life long friends, and lots of drama in between. I’d recommend it to fans off Stephen Kings work that wasn’t to read something with a different take to it. It’s one of those King classics in my opinion. Fantastically written with amazing characters. A really beautiful book in a way.

⭐I gave this 5 stars because I think it’s one of Kings best books. The love hate relation ship between Delores and Vera is so very well written. Especially when Vera become bed bound. All though it’s so funny it’s very sad. Vera sees dustbunnies that has Delores scuttling under the bed looking for them. But it’s the way he has weaved this story to tie all the characters together with Delores daughter that she hasn’t seen in years. He must be the finest writers of this century. People call him a HORROR writer. I wish people would give him a go especially this book. To see it’s not Horror. But a master piece written by a genius!

⭐What a wonderful book, on the face of it it seems a simple story but still, it covers the whole gambit of life. It’s full of hardships life can throw, the choices you make and how you eventually pay for those choices. The book grabs you from the first page and doesn’t let you go until the last. It is funny, heart warming, sad and a little spooky but most of all its the characters, you feel you’ve known them your entire life and are deeply invested in what happens to them. I would recommend this book to anyone, totally worth your time and money. It is because book’s such as Dolores Claiborne, that Stephen king is considered one of the greatest authors.

⭐Though I am not Stephen King’s greatest fan I have read several of his novels though I tend to shy away from the horror end of things. Dolores Claiborne was recommended by my friend, and I had no real idea what it was about.The book is written in monologue form, its protagonist Dolores, is being interviewed by the police regarding the death of her employer, and the words are entirely “her own”. There is no descriptive prose and it features no dialogue from the three people in the room with her. Dolores is the storyteller, they, are her audience.The narrative voice succeeds well, an elderly housekeeper who though not particularly educated is wily, bitchy, and has a don’t-give-a-**** attitude. The kind of cantankerous old biddy you wouldn’t want to cross. It sounds authentic and effortless, as though King has a good ear for picking up the rhythm of the older woman who likes to tell a good story.The story itself is pretty simple, told in the present and the past Dolores talks of the difficulties of working for a demanding, nasty boss, and of how the two came to be kindred spirits in more ways than one. The story flicks between the two, when Dolores first began working for Vera as a pregnant young wife, and her days as her carer and companion at the end of her life. It is really two stories as well..the story of how demanding it is to be a carer and the story of how suffocating a bad marriage to a bad husband can be. Despite this, the story holds few surprises, the problems in Dolores’s marriage are the usual cliches and Vera’s early characterisation as the wealthy domineering boss is cliched too.What is quite heartwarming is the way in which these two women become the glue that holds the other together, and the way in which they keep each others secrets.It’s a short book, and an easy read. I enjoyed it, but I don’t think it’s a extraordinary book. I’m glad I read it, it has a potboiler quality that sort of drags you in. It’s a page turner, but it doesn’t make waves with any originality, except for perhaps in the very well executed use of the monologue form.Can’t decide between a 6/7 out of 10
