Description
To survive another generation, they’ll need to live among the shifters.
Long ago, a world war waged between shapeshifters and humans. Humans lost, and the consequences were dire….
Ella is part of a clan hidden deep in the forests of Washington State. She doesn’t know if there are other human clans out there or if hers in the last one, but she knows there isn’t a future for her people if they don’t do something drastic. All of her life, she has heard horror stories about the Others, the beasts that surround them in high-tech dwellings beyond the mountains, but the Others may be their only hope.
Ty Bearclaw, a grizzly shifter, is the curator at the Washington State Animal Sanctuary, Research, and Observation Center (WSASROC). A call from a rancher about something causing an unusual kind of havoc along the borders of the National Forest brings him to the Olympic Mountain National Park, where Ty is furious to discover that the rancher placed a trap to capture the creature on government-protected property. It isn’t an animal caught in the trap, though—it’s a human woman! Her entire species was believed to be extinct! What is even more confounding is his bear’s reaction to the female. All his life he wondered who his mate would be, what she’d be like, what kind of shifter she would be. He never once considered that his mate might not be a shifter at all, and her very presence would change their understanding of the past and the future.
Internationally acclaimed S.E. Smith presents a new action-packed story full of romance and adventure. Brimming with her signature humor, vivid scenes, and beloved characters, this book is sure to be another fan favorite!

From the Inside Flap A peek inside Ella and the Beast!Oh, she’s out there,” Peterson said, walking up with a grim expression on his face. “She’s not alone either.”Ty’s gaze sharpened on the tired, but determined grin on Van’s dirty face. His gaze moved to the object Van was holding in his hand. It looked like a child’s toy.”Where did you find that?” Ty demanded, reaching his hand out for the small doll.”Twenty miles west of here,” Van replied. “I had to take a piss and stopped to water a tree. It was at the base of it.””Charming,” Tracy chuckled with a wiggle of her nose.”Hey, it’s what wolves do,” Van retorted with a grin.

⭐ The synopsis given on Amazon is an acurate description of the storyline of this book. I found there are simularities between this series and the Dragon Lords of Valdier series. The weres’ inner beast sound just like the inner dragons of Valdier and it’s love at first sight when they meet their true mates. This book kept me reading, but I really like books who’s characters make sense in the decisions they make. I didn’t understand how Ella would put her clan in jeopardy by going home with Ty especially when all she’s heard is how the weres waged genocide against humans centuries ago. Or why Ty would jeopardize Ella by taking her back with him. It would make better sense for Ty to live in the wilderness with Ella despite the early onset of winter. There is no way her presence could be kept a secret among weres and the weres live in a modern world while humans are little better than primitives. Until she shows up, humans were thought to be extinct so no one was looking for them. Now that they know humans exist there are collectors who desire to own them as well as profiteers who want to breed humans to use as hunted game and sex slaves. The book doesn’t end in a cliff hanger, but it’s plain that it continues onto the next book “Mitchell’s Untamed Mate”. There are quite a few single shifters and humans so they will all probably get their own book. The one thing that I found irritating is that there are a lot of different characters that speak with a ” husky voice. ” This got really old , really fast. The author could just delete this description without affecting the story as everytime I read that description, it just made me roll my eyes and think “Really? Again?” Still I plan on reading the next book when it comes out. You can pretty much predict who’s pairing up with whom, but I am still curious how the humans are going to react to the weres knowing about them. Will the humans lose their freedom and end up in a guarded reservation to protect them? Will they end up like rhinos and elephants being guarded against poaching? The human tribe is so small that inbreeding will be a problem and crossbreeding with weres will only doom the human’s future as a species.
⭐ This is an awesome, unique, shifter love story. I loved the way the author wrote this emotional novel. It is not a simple shifter love story because in this world the humans are believed to be extinct and live in fear for very good reasons. So imagine hero’s surprise when he finds his mate, his very human mate!!! The obstacles to their HEA were very well written and you are right along with the characters, as they fight for their right to love each other.STOP POSSIBLE SPOILERS}}}}} THANKSThe hero was the best. He was a mixture of sweet, loving, caring, protective, nerdiness all wrapped in one hot package. I loved reading about how he not only had to find her but pursue her to give them a chance. Heroine was another story. She lived very primitively before meeting the hero so I liked to think of her as cavewoman-like. I found humor in the dialogue and the adjustments heroine had to make in the advanced technological world the hero lived in was both touching and funny at times. The fears they both had were very real. Heroine is not only having to fight misconceptions bred into her from the dangers her people faced in the past but current fears of being harmed and exploited by those that saw humans as lesser things without rights. Hero’s fears was in being able to pursue heroine to be his and keep her safe from those that wish to take her away from him. It was very emotional at times, but the author did a great job of balancing it off with some humor.I also felt the secondary characters added so much to the story. Both hero and heroine had great support that they both needed to help for the right for hero to claim heroine and keep the heroine safe. Heroine’s own world held great characters that I can’t wait to hopefully read their love story in the coming “More Than Human Book” series. From the main characters, supporting characters to the villains they were all well rounded and added greatly to the story itself. I highly enjoyed all the character and can’t wait to read more about them. This is a safe book. There is no OW or OM, but there are some political shenanigans that want to see heroine mated to someone of her species. However, heroine is no shrinking violet and she isn’t one to be easily led by nobody.. So hero really has his hands full in winning his mate over. It was a real joy to read. I would highly recommend this book. It had some steamy elements to it and the chemistry was so good between hero and heroine. Hero is heroine’s first. The love story is a stand alone book but ending leaves it clear there will be more to the series as we go back for more humans!!!
⭐ This was a great start to a new series. I especially enjoyed how the author built the world and set it up for future expansion. I liked how the H was strong and loving while protective of his mate. I especially enjoyed how the author made the h strong both physically and emotionally. In fact I enjoyed this book so much that I read it in one sitting!I had to deduct one star from this book because I noticed some editing issues (incorrect words used) and it interrupted the flow of the story. I also was a bit frustrated with the author’s cloak and dagger approach. While I understand why she was doing it (so that there would be future conflict) it seemed to distract from the story at times and became a bit convoluted. Overall a good beginning to a new series that I will continue to read.
⭐ Although I really liked this book and the whole different take on shifters being the more dominant on the planet and humans in hiding/extinct, it was rough trying to stay interested in this story at first.Books like this is would have been nice to have a prologue giving a bit of back history with the humans and shifters. For instance why did they war start, where did the shifters come from, how were remaining humans treated? In the story it mentioned one human being kept in captivity, but what happened? Was she a science experiment, was she kept under observation, was she put on display like a zoo??There was a bit of whiplash from the characters decisions as well. Ella couldn’t make up her mind if she was coming or going. One minute she’s trying to force Ty to leave and forget her and her people, then she’s going back with him. She goes to his home and after seeing a disturbing painting wants to go home, but then the next minute is putting on a strip tease and sex session in the Jacuzzi with Ty.One thing that really annoyed me about Ty, was he was determined to keep Ella safe and a secret, yet it seems his house became a media circus. If you want to keep someone a secret, you really shouldn’t have so many people entering your house, especially when you aren’t there or give warning to the secret you want to hide to stay hidden. They knew Van’s older brother had a tendency to leave and return whenever he wanted, Ty even mentioned not even knowing the young man anymore, yet he never once thought to look into him when Ella came up missing??After I did get into the book though I am glad I kept at it. Having to adapt to a new world is never an easy thing, but imagine if the world has advanced over centuries and you had no clue how to fit into the big new world.I do think I’ll read the next book between Tracy and Mitchell. It will be interesting to see how the clan leader handles his shifter woman who is alpha and dominant on her own.
⭐ I just recently discovered this author and will be hunting up some of her other books. This was a good read with the story line taking the predominant role in the book over the romance/sex. It was an enjoyable story with an interesting twist on the typical shifter story. In this story the idea is that there ended up being a war between shifters and humans, which is something I could easily see happening if humans ever found out that shifters existed in the world. Unfortunately humans lost the war and shifters believed that they had wiped out the whole human race. This is the story of Ty, a grizzly shifter, who finds out that humans have been hiding deep in the forests of protected area something like state parks because another shifter has been digging holes for traps to get rid of what he believes is an animal or shifter that has been messing around his home. When Ty arrives to his shock he finds a human has stumbled into the trap and once he gets close to her he realizes she is his mate. She is rescued by her clan and now Ty has to find her. The story was well written and there were a lot of reactions and interactions between the humans and Ty’s shifter family and friends that are strained at times. It’s hard to trust when you think the shifter that just found out humans still exist might want to finish what they started and kill off the last of the humans. The story line wasn’t sacrificed just to put in more sex scenes and that is refreshing as sometimes it seems like the story line is an afterthought. I look forward to any further stories in this series that she will hopefully write. I’d love to see where she takes this particular series.
⭐ Wow I have waited a long time for this…a new book line and it is so different and I LOVE IT. Geniuses really. Thank u SE Smith for developing a story that is so cool…but please, Please in the next book do not start the book out with chapter that repeat from the first story…just pick up as if u were writing it for the first time. Please it just drags the story line down…if they read the first book then we all know what is going on. Great read can’t wait for the next one. Yeah
⭐ I rarely give five stars and the few I did usually went to my top favorite authors whom I love their creative worlds.Several of those same authors have really gone off in what I expect from them in their series. The good news is that it forces me to venture out to new authors and bump them up my fav list.S.E. Smith became a must by when I ran across her series of gold dogs, alpha males, dragons and the feisty earth women who kicked some butt and took names.I laughed more out loud at the trouble these women caused and couldn’t wait for the next. This one I didn’t know what to expect but it was must have and read straight through in few hours.Who would even imagine to put the human race in the role of nearly extinct and the shifters who are the ones who rule the world. It was challenging in a good way to put yourself in that role and how you would have survived. The author shows her usual humor and emotion and how the couple’s deal with mix species issues. It was just such a shift of possibilities that I’m still thinking “What if…?”I’m putting this series on a will buy list and can’t wait…
⭐ I gave this book five stars because it had depth in the storyline. It has history of the characters and their relationships. Ella a human who clan must stay hidden from “the others” meaning shifters. The history shows that shifters and humans were at war. The humans were supposed to be extinct when Ty a bear shifter finds Ella. She is afraid but tells him to kill her quickly but warns him she will haunt him all of his days. Ty recognized that Ella is his mate and kisses her. Before he can actually get to know her, she is rescued by her clan mates. Ty was shot with his own tranquilizer gun. He wake up finding them gone. He tried searching for her with no luck. He gets assistance from his twin sister Tracy and her friends Van and Peterson wolf shifters brothers. They find her but she saves him from death and is banished from her clan. She goes with Ty to his home. This is when things gets really interesting. Recommend this book. I can’t wait for book 2.
⭐ This book is another long list of books that shows why S.E. Smith is on my list of must read authors. She writes books that are so fun and interesting to read that you can’t put them down! This is the 1st in a new series that tells the story of humans that are almost extinct and the shifters that rule the world. It has everything you could want in a book, suspense, comedy, action, and of course lots of romance! Don’t miss this one, or any of her books actually!
⭐ This book lacks the rip roaring humor found in her other series . I love her Alien Romance novels . This bok was well written and edited properly as always but it lack something I found in her Sarafin , Valdier Dragons , Curizan , and other interconnected Alien Series .I found the book lagged in areas to the point of boredom . But that’s me and my taste in books it’s not to say someone else won’t love this series .I suggest reading this novel and decide what your own opinion is .
