Description

From the bestselling author of the Spider Shepherd and Jack Nightingale series comes First Response, the utterly addictive new thriller by Stephen Leather.

London is under siege.

Nine men in suicide vests primed to explode hold hostages in nine different locations around the city, and are ready to die for their cause.

Their mission: to force the government to release jihadist prisoners from Belmarsh Prison.

Their deadline: 6 p.m. Today.

But the bombers are cleanskins, terrorists with no obvious link to any group, and who do not appear on any anti-terror watch list. What has brought them together on this one day to act in this way?

Mo Kamran is the Superintendent in charge of the Special Crime and Operations branch of the Met. As the disaster unfolds and the SAS, armed police, and other emergency services rush to the scenes, he is tasked with preventing the biggest terrorist outrage the capital has ever known.

But nothing is what it seems. And only Kamran has the big picture. Will anyone believe him?

A chillingly plausible and pulse-pounding depiction of how London might be held to ransom in a concerted terrorist attack: this is thriller writing at its very best.

Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:

⭐ I started reading First Response yesterday morning and literally had great difficulty putting it down. Some books (not enough) leave you wanting it never to end and now I feel saddened that I have nothing lined up that will be as good as this.It is a great entertaining read with a magnificent twist in the tail. One of his best and well worth the wait.

⭐ A good portrayal of rapidly changing coordination and responses, to a rapidly changing set of difficult circumstances (multiple acts of terrorism in multiple locations at the same time). Law enforcement command structure, communications and decision making with rapid response to changing situations with many unknowns, all keep the reader thinking. A recommended “read”…

⭐ Using a well worn theme of Muslim extremism the story plods along testing each thread of the story with varying levels of violence. The twist inthe plot at the end is the book’s only redeeming factor bringing it up to a 3 star rather than a 1 star. The characters, led by the new fellow Mo, are largely uninspiring and hopefully left to wither.

⭐ This was a most unusual book. The story was well thought out and very topical. Each character, despite being in different places, came over very clearly and the denouement was unexpected. I will certainly look for other books by the same author.

⭐ It starts very much as a standard anti-terrorism adventure story, which however evolves in an increasingly unexpected manner. I enjoyed the book, and recommend it to anyone who wants to fun yet insightful read.

⭐ Riveting, plot is excellent. No matter how good you are you’ll never guess the real motive, until the very end.

⭐ I found the plot unlikely and the characters not quite convincing but there was enough in the story to keep me interested until the ‘final reveal’. A good book to have available if your flight is delayed and you need a undemanding read.

⭐ another good read from this author

⭐ very interesting read. Kept me guessing till near the end. Lots of twists and turns and found it to be very entertaining.

⭐ An interesting if not engaging variation by leather. Not so sure he will carry this into a series or sequence. Doubt it sets sufficient texture
