Description

Makenna James and Caden Grayson have been inseparable since the scorching night they were trapped in a pitch-black elevator. But they’re not strangers anymore, and Makenna hopes that night put them on the path to forever. All that stands in the way is introducing her tattooed, pierced, and scarred boyfriend to her father and over-protective brothers.

Must fight for love in the light…

Haunted by a childhood tragedy and the loss of his family, Caden never thought he’d find the kind of red-hot love he shares with Makenna. But the deeper he falls, the more he fears the devastation sure to come when he loses her, too. When secrets are revealed and the past threatens the present, Caden questions whether Makenna deserves more than he can give. Maybe they’re just too different—and he’s far too damaged—after all…

“This follow up to one of the most beloved couples in romance is delivered in the emotional and touching way that only Laura Kaye can do. Love in the Light is everything I could have wanted for Makenna and Caden–and more!” ~ Jillian Stein, Read-Love-Blog

⭐ Love in the Light is a sequel that I’ve been waiting a long time to read. I read Hearts in Darkness in April 2011, and I immediately fell in love with Caden Grayson and Makenna James. I couldn’t wait to finally get more on this beautiful couple and find out what happened after that fateful night. Fans wanted more, and boy, oh boy, did Laura Kaye deliver in giving us all a shining sequel to enjoy to our hearts content!Love in the Light begins 2 months after Caden and Makenna got trapped in that darn elevator. They’ve been getting to know each other more and seem very happy together. Makenna takes Caden home with her during the holidays to meet her father and brothers, and things get a little overwhelming for Caden.Poor Caden! In Hearts in Darkness we discovered that this sweet, tattooed, and scarred man lives with an anxiety disorder everyday. In Love in the Light, how he deals with anxiety and panic attacks is pushed to the limit. If you loved Caden before, then you will fall for him harder this time around. Both Caden and Makenna go through so much, but Caden has to finally make peace with the one thing holding him back from happiness forever after.Once again Laura Kaye draws out deep emotions in her storytelling. If you or a loved one live with anxiety disorder, then you will understand the severity of Caden’s pain. Laura Kaye gets these feelings right in the story, and it all feels raw and real. Also, Caden is a paramedic, and she gives nod to emergency first responders in a positive light. I love that! The undeniable chemistry between Caden and Makenna continue to steam up the pages, too. There are plenty of heart-stopping scenes filled with warmth and tender love that you will need tissues on hand.Love in the Light is a truly satisfying and worthy sequel! I will read this over and over again like I did with Hearts in Darkness. Thank you, Laura Kaye, for giving us MORE!

⭐ My Review:The precursor to this book, Hearts in Darkness, is one of my favorite books ever. In fact, I can pretty much guarantee that this is the book that I’ve gifted most in my lifetime because I love it so much. I keep a stock of paperback copies of it to give away. As a result, I was so excited to hear that Laura Kaye was writing a sequel to it. BUT that’s a LOT of expectation to live up to. Luckily, the sequel was really good. The reason book #1 was so good was simply because the setup of the book was so creative. Caden is a guy with issues. He’s worked through a lot of those issues in a physical way with a transformation of his body with tattoos and piercings. Something that played huge into the first book. Caden is an intimidating looking guy, but Makenna never saw him before the lights went out. As a result, she got to know the man before she had the physical impression of him. They fell in love, fast and hard. This book takes place two months after that fateful day. The thing is, although Caden has worked through so many of his issues during his lifetime, those issues are still there…lying dormant, but still there. His new relationship with Makenna terrifies Caden. He’s lost everything in his life that meant something to him. He loves her and knows he won’t be able to survive it if he loses her too and he’s sure that he will lose her. That’s simply the way his life goes…so he goes into a downward spiral. This book was so good, but it was also so heartbreaking. Caden’s story is horrific…for a 14 yo to go through what he went through. My heart hurts for him. And that’s the thing…Makenna gets him like no other person has before, but even for her, she doesn’t realize the depth of his emotional scars. I loved the way that the story played out. It worked for me and felt very real. I loved getting to see how Makenna and Caden were after the fact, how they eventually did have to face the reality of his scars, and work their way through them. They came out of this book so much “more”…I loved that about this book. Because the way the first book ended it was more a “happily for now” than a “happily ever after.” This book gave me some closure and a sense of happiness and that Makenna and Caden will last forever. I loved it!Thank you Laura Kaye for writing it! I highly recommend the book. And if you haven’t read the first, you NEED TO! Go buy it now and then enjoy this final chapter in their story.I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review, but I’m hoping it comes out in print so I can buy a copy for my keeper shelf.

⭐ Every now and then I come across a book that just pulls at my heart. A book that is so good it just leaves me feeling raw yet incredibly happy. Damn you, Laura Kaye…why did you have to write such a good book ?!! I cannot help but wonder what it would be like to be a fly on Laura Kaye’s wall. To hear what the award-winning author is saying, or even thinking, when she is writing one of her fabulous books. What does she listen to, how is she inspired? The other thing that I have often wondered is what an authors love life must be like. I mean come on, they write the most amazing scenes, they must have incredible partners or a very active imagination 😉 Reading Laura’s latest book Love in The Light – those love scenes…I mean – come on!!! Talk about panty wetting, heart racing, incredibly hot scenes. Damn Caden…no, damn you Laura – where do you get your inspiration?!! I am trying to concentrate, but all I keep thinking about is “those” scenes. Sheesh – can’t a girl get a break ;)To understand what is going on in Lauras latest book, you really have to read her first book Hearts in Darkness. It is a very short book – a novella, so don’t panic. But you really do need to read it to know how the couple met and understand the personalities of each of the main characters.A quick run through – In Hearts in Darkness: Caden was already on the elevator when it stopped to let a young red-haired woman on. After Makenna gets in the elevator, it once again makes its descent. Within seconds of the doors shutting, the lights flicker, the elevator shudders and the pair are left in complete darkness. Doesn’t sound too bad? Well, Caden is claustrophobic and afraid of the dark. I don’t want to give too much away but I will say that Makenna helps Caden overcome his fear of dark enclosed spaces. The two become friends and a deep connection is found. When the elevator is fixed, the pair begin dating and all is great. In Laura’s second book – Love in the Light, several months have passed since the pair met and became trapped in the broken down elevator. Life is great, so much so that the pair practically live together in Makenna’s apartment. It is the festive season and the pair decide to travel to Makenna’s fathers house for thanksgiving. Soon after their arrival Caden meets the rest of the family as well as a surprise guest, who also happens to be Makenna’s ex-fiance. Over the course of the weekend, Cameron tries everything to convince Makenna that he hasn’t stopped loving her. After the pair return home to Makenna’s apartment, Caden begins to question their relationship. Is he good enough? Can he make her happy? The closer they get, the more Caden feels incapable of loving her the way he feels she deserves. It is a complicated dilemma, one that Caden feels is easily solved, by moving back to his own place. Over time Caden slips more and more into depression. Loosing his family was one thing, but losing Makenna…that was all too much. There is much more I could say, but it would give it all away. Ok, how can I say it – Makenna is hiding a great big secret. And the finale – well let me just say that something really big happens at the end. Like really big….and if you want to find out more, your will just have to purchase the book 🙂 Trust me, you wont be disappointed.- My Romance Addiction blog

⭐ I was not expecting to love this book as much as I do. I didn’t think that there was any possible way to top my love for the first book in this series, and while I don’t think this book is better than the first, I do think it is just as wonderful — which is pretty rare. Here’s the thing. I very, VERY rarely purchase ebooks. Why? Because I obtain something like 10 free ebooks every single week and the thought of purchasing one seems absolutely ridiculous to me.However, when I spontaneously decided I just had to re-listen to Hearts in Darkness earlier this week (after purchasing 4 brand new audiobooks from Audible’s Summer Sale. I know, I know.) I fell in love with Caden and Makenna all over again… and I needed to know what happened next in their story. So, I downloaded a sample, thinking that I could just get a taste, realize that it wasn’t as good, and move on with my life. That’s not what happened. I was addicted immediately, bought the whole book, and read it in a day. Which was easy considering this was a novella as well. There is a whole lot more drama in this book that I was not expecting AT ALL. The instalove that did not bother me at all in the first book, continued to grow quickly and believably, and even when a cliche/trope that I’m not usually fond of occurred, I still loved every second of it.Caden’s worries and issues are believable and, for me, relatable. Nothing seemed forced and the pacing, despite this novel being so short, was absolutely perfect.I’m in such awe of Laura Kaye and her ability to give you all the feels and tell such a complete, fulfilling story in such few pages.

⭐ First of all I want to applaud Laura Kaye for tackling a very important subject…clinical depression. I had someone close to me that was diagnosed clinically depressed and it was like she was existing…not living. I really think that Laura did a great job of touching on that a little bit along with triggers. So, this is the sequel to Hearts in Darkness that I have waited for…for so long! I absolutely LOVE Makenna and Caden ;).So this picks up a little after our beloved elevator day…Caden and Makenna went out for that pizza, I guess, and are dating. They stay at her place most of the time and things are going well. Now the holidays are coming up and Makenna wants Caden to spend it with her dad and brothers.Caden can’t believe his luck…he has been keeping everyone at arms length since the horrible accident and has truly believed that good things shouldn’t happen to him…that he should have died that day. He wants to be happy, he wants Makenna, he just doesn’t think he is deserving. So they go to Makenna’s childhood home and like any boyfriend would…he is worried about being accepted. Makenna made it clear in the elevator that she is very close to her dad and brothers and it would be hard on their relationship if Caden didn’t fit in.The first person Caden meets is her dad. Her dad is great though and it seems that they are going to get along well. Her brothers seem to be ok too…except for Ian. Why is that?Well Ian brought his best friend Cameron to Thanksgiving as well. Who is Cameron? Makenna’s ex-boyfriend who still has the hots for her ☹. He spends his time making Cameron feel inferior…Makenna and Cameron even have a really intimate conversation that Caden overhears. Should Makenna be with Cameron? They have known each other forever, he is already a part of the family since they all grew up together, he is a doctor!! What does Caden have to offer?Caden starts to pull away…It is really the saddest thing…I mean a lot of fans may not get it but he really thinks he is undeserving to be so happy when he doesn’t even feel like he should have survived. He has been existing and now Makenna wants him to live, to have this relationship where they give each other themselves…Can Makenna forgive him? Can she be secure that he won’t pull away again? It’s a total HEA, LoL, but it is great to read how they get to that place. Love the ending! It was a great ending to a great love story.

⭐ This is the Part Two of a story that started in Hearts In Darkness. The first book was fun and had just a hint of what was to come in the second book, truly. This book, ripped out my heart. I suffer from some of the same illnesses that Caden has and my husband stuck by me and still does. The pain of Caden is real and scary, the selflessness of MaKenna is also absolutely real because my husband lives it everyday. I cannot say enough how much this book touched me. My biggest concern is what Laura Kaye had to have experienced in her own life to know how to write this book. When you start to read this book, turn off phones, lock the doors, turn out the lights or whatever is your favorite way to shut out the world, because you won’t want to stop reading and you don’t wish it to end.

⭐ Simply amazing story. I am not sure how it was possible to top Hearts in Darkness, but Love in the Light has surpassed all my expectations. This book has so many FEELS! Each word Laura wrote envelopes you in the story to the point where you truly feel as if you are watching this play out right in your view.Caden has got to bask in Makenna’s light for nearly two months… can this last for a person who feels darkness in their soul? A feeling of helplessness that you just cannot seem to completely erase from your mind? Camden’s journey is a breath taking one. It will steal your breath then gently restore it.Makenna and Caden fight for what the need, what they deserve… A love that lives in the light.I will leave you with this, this is a MUST read. I cannot emphasize enough how much of a genuinely entrancing story this is.Happy Reading~ Sherry

⭐ Finally!!! A sequel to Hearts in Darkness-an extraordinarily original book in and of itself- Kaye brings us back two months after Caden and Makenna met in that dark elevator…and omg…this book has all the feels!! Dealing with his PTSD, Caden is still struggling with the concept that he really deserves an HEA. Makenna is determined to stand by him and help him fight his demons, however, Caden starts shutting down and closing everyone out…including Makenna. Does he find his way back to the light or will he stay in the dark? I am dying to say more but don’t want to give any spoilers! All I can say is that Love in the Light gave great closure to a couple who had one of the most unusual beginnings I’ve read to date. A definite must read for both books…you don’t want to miss this duet!

⭐ LOVE IN THE LIGHT takes place two months after the elevator scene in HEARTS IN DARKNESS. Makenna and Caden are practically living together and despite some insecurities on his part, they’re both very happy. But it’s that happiness that Caden fears most, because everyone he’s ever loved has either died or abandoned him, so when he starts to develop strong feelings for Makenna, he has a hard time trusting it. Makenna is a very strong, loving and patient woman, which is exactly what Caden needs. She knows about his past and the nightmares that haunt him, and she does everything she can to ease them. But he’s kept from her how bad his depression can get, so when it starts to hit him again, he does what he thinks is best: he leaves. Sadly, it’s at a time when Makenna needs him the most.LOVE IN THE LIGHT is told in dual POVs and is a novella, so it’s a fairly quick read. It’s part of a duet, so you need to read HEARTS IN DARKNESS first as it’s the story about how Caden and Makenna meet. This was an enjoyable read and I really liked getting to know more about them as individuals and as a couple, but this is not what I would call a light read. You will shed some tears, and following Caden’s downward spiral into depression may be hard for some people to take.

⭐ 3.5 to 4 I Love Caden Stars…Ok, so i read this in exactly 5 hours, i couldn’t stop, even if i wanted to, i have been expecting this book so i was gonna read it until i dropped from exhaustion. Now, i read Hearts in Darkness in 2012 and the story stayed with me all these years, i even re-read that short story more than once and i don’t regret it.I loved to know what had happened after that elevator, how were their lives and we get to see that here. We get to meet her family, her brothers (though now i want their books) and a little more meat on their personalities, their dreams and how they make their relationship work. There were a few things i didn’t like that much and is why this book for me is not a 5 star:1. It was very predictable, so much, i didn’t feel the need to read to know what was gonna happen. Did that make me DNF this book? No, nothing would.2. Obviously there had to be some drama and his name was Cameron, i wanted to see a scene where she puts him in his place. We didn’t see that, just a tiny remark.3. One of her brothers was not nice and some things happened and i wanted to see how he would apologize to her or at least have a remark of how his behavior toward Caden had changed.4. Also, how much time passed and the fact that Caden didn’t contact Makenna at least to tell her, hey i’m alive, i need some time, please, just some time, i promise i will explain everything, let me work on something. But no, nothing, and it bothered me somehow, good thing she is so forgiving and what he was going through was understandable. This is all just ME and my weirdness…Overall, it was a highly expected book and a good one.
