Animosities, arrogance, and ambition create a dangerous spider’s web around this reluctant hero as Hardy searches for the hard truth.

This time Frank Parker, a retired policeman, tells Cliff that a convicted murderer (now dead) might have been innocent, and that he, Parker, was guilty of a massive conflict of interest, having had an affair with the convicted man’s wife. Cliff is fascinated, but how do you go about solving a crime that happened nearly a quarter-century ago? As usual, Corris, who is hailed as the father of Australian crime fiction, draws us completely into Cliff’s world and, thanks to the Australian setting, makes the story feel utterly fresh. ⭐ Great read classic Hardy. Sydney as it used to be. Characters are authentic and true to life. Could’ve spent a bit more time on plot development
